My research interests are in studying the current and historical practice of comprehensive musicianship with an emphasis on investigating the mutually beneficial relationship of performing, composing, and improvising music. Specifically, I am interested in the educational outcomes of incorporating composition and improvisation into the pedagogy of traditional applied "classical" performance. I believe that learning and practicing basic compositional and improvisational skills can enhance the craft of performing, leading to creative musicianship and innovative interpretive perspective. Some of my research and activity in this broad subject is outlined below.
- “Improvisation as a Compositional Process” Lecture. Presented at the Escola de Música at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 26, 2023
- "Free Improvisation Strategies and Benefits" Lecture. Presented during The Ohio State University Contemporary Music Festival on April, 1, 2023
